Lives in Transition

Lives in Transition is an intensive and extensive Christian based pre/post-release program provided by Prison Fellowship Victoria for suitable prisoners approaching the last four to six months of their sentence.
An intensive and extensive Christian based pre/post-release program provided by Prison Fellowship for suitable prisoners approaching the last four to six months of their sentence.

Its purpose is to:
  • Introduce prisoners to a value system that addresses offending behaviour and provides them with alternate ways of thinking about their lifestyles with a view of reducing the risk of re-offending.
  • Teach prisoners a range of living skills that will enhance their opportunities on release.
Bill Sutcliffe, Director of Lives in Transition comments:

Over 100 men have now been through Lives in Transition program and we are only aware of 18 men returning to prison. It is most encouraging.  Thank you for you prayer and practical support.

Bill adds, Dennis (not his real name) had just finished participating in 'Victim Awareness' - a topic in the Lives in Transition course presented by Arthur Bolkas, a former prisoner himself! Dennis produced a soiled and crinkled newspaper cutting he had been carrying around for a long time.  It was about a child who had been deeply traumatised by a burglary in her home - one he had committed.  You could see he had been deeply moved.  "Guys", he said, addressing Arthur and I - "I've got to do something about this.  I can't live with myself."  By contacting the Magistrate who had sentenced him, he started that healing journey.

Victim Awareness, Men's Health and Employment and Living skills have been added to the curriculum.  Prison Fellowship have also formed an association with Gordon Institute of TAFE so that 'Food Handling and 'Employment and Living Skills' are now Certificated Courses from Gordon.
